Years ago I heard of the phenomenon geocaching. It is very popular amongst computer-"nerds" of which I'm one. But I never took the time to figure it out.
At this moment in time our free-time spending is as follows:
1. We have two dogs that we enjoy a lot and that we make long walks with.
2. We own a motor home, that we use to go out and camp on many different locations around Europe.
If you combine the above 2 free-time spendings the result is that we are walking around with two dogs at many different locations in Europe. We travel around and normally don't stay long on one spot. Finding a suitable walking area is not always straightforward. So the result is that we walk the normal easy to find walks around the camping sites, and by occasion a longer walk out of the official guides.
Recently my attention was brought to geocaching again and I finally took the time to investigate it and became really enthusiastic about the possibilities.
To us it seems to be the perfect match with our two major free-time spendings, also we like to puzzle as well and in this manner we have a goal when we walk around. After all when you walk a cache you are always sure that you can walk in that area, and because of the GPS-receiver that you bring with you, you can always find you're way home, at least when you mark the starting point of the trip.
So conclusion made, we wanted to go geocaching. And then you need a GPS-receiver. Looked around on the Internet and decided to buy a Garmin Oregon 300. A new GPS-receiver with modern operating possibilities, nice looking also. Ordered it via the Internet on Monday 13 October 2008 at 22:00.
Figured out a nickname (SchocoBears) and registered at www.geocaching.com and www.geocaching.nl (the Dutch site).
We have chosen two potential first caches in our hometown and are now waiting for the hardware to arrive so that we can start caching.
